OH, OH!! You know you are in BIG trouble when you are on the receiving end of an angry ‘finger-point’ or a vertical ‘hand-chop!’
Both of these body language gestures are emphatic illustrators of the important and often angry verbal statements that the speaker is making.
Conan O’Brien cleverly ‘points’ out to, and ‘pokes fun’ at, Harrison Ford because the actor uses the finger point technique frequently in his movie roles!!
Harrison is so skilled in this anger technique that he is ambidextrous as he uses both of his hands equally well!
When the frustration or anger is authentic, the speaker’s finger pointing, hand-chopping, or fist pounding are synchronized exactly to the spoken words.
Co-Owner / Breeder Steve Coburn of California Chrome angrily reacts (i.e., with finger pointing and vertical hand chopping) to losing the Triple Crown opportunity at the Belmont Stakes on 06/07/14 in New York.
Coburn blasted and accused his opponents of:
- playing by, “…a cowards’ way out!!” and,
- intentionally not competing their horses in all three of the major 2014 races:
(1) the Kentucky Derby,
(2) the Preakness Stakes, and
(3) the Belmont Stakes
According to Coburn, “That’s right! It’s ALL-or-NOTHING!! It’s ALL-or-NOTHING!!”
Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner California Chrome finished in a dead-heat for fourth with Wicked Strong.
And who can forget the infamous denial of “I did not have sexual relations with that woman…Miss Lewinsky…” and the angry combined vertical finger pointing and vertical finger chopping of President Bill Clinton on January 26, 1998 at a White House press conference:
On May 15, 2014, Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki claimed he’s “mad as hell” over allegations of treatment delays and preventable deaths at a Phoenix veterans hospital. However, Shinseki’s weak facial expressions and light right hand pat onto his left arm are out-of-synch and do not forcefully illustrate his verbal statement of being “Mad as Hell!”
When the WORDs say one thing, but the BODY shows something else…what are you going to believe? It is important to consider what Shinseki’s normal baseline behaviors may be.
Perhaps, he naturally is a calm demeanor individual who doesn’t overtly express anger forcefully.
Also, remember to consider possible career military and Asian cultural differences that Shinseki may have regarding how anger is appropriately expressed in public.
